I spent a good portion of the past summer weekends following amateur and elite racing on scenic courses around Central Oregon. These events have (surprisingly, to me) become some of my favorites to photograph of late. To an extent, I’ve long enjoyed shooting sports, but I didn’t have many opportunities or interest in individual, outside the realm of popular team, sports in the past. Since triathlons, criteriums, mountain bike races, and marathons became a bigger part of my workload, I’ve developed an appreciation of athletics beyond the traditional fields of play. These competitions center more on an athlete’s race against themselves, the course, and the clock. There’s opportunity for different types of photographs and moments. It’s been a challenge and a learning process I’ve enjoyed. A selection from several summer races:
