I recently spent a few days wandering around Grants Pass Downs, a small-town horse racing track in southwest Oregon, to photograph the atmosphere, community, and characters of the racing scene for a New York Times story. Visually, this was right up my alley and made me want to keep exploring, despite the sweltering temperatures in the high 90s/low 100s. Pretty cool to see the story and photos in print as well, which is something I miss from my days as a daily newspaper photographer.
